Artist Profile

"It was during a very successful 22 year career in doll making that I began my first painting. The time spent assembling
over 12,000 dolls was broken up by an occasional spattering on a canvas that eventually took two years to complete. I loved
the process though I thought I would never have very many paintings at that rate, so my paintings have been primarily for
gifts or my own pleasure.
I have lived in Lake Wildwood for 10 years, and the Art Club was an inspiration for my ongoing desire to learn to paint.
Though I consider myself primarily self-taught, I have taken many art classes and workshops experimenting with a variety of
mediums including oils, pastels and watercolors. Lately I am devoted mostly to watercolors."
Kandy had a 22 year career in dollmaking that catapulted her to an international following by doll collectors. In the
mid 1990's, Kandy began exploring other creative avenues and began teaching herself to paint in oils.
When asked about her art, Kandy's face lights up and she bubbles over with enthusiasm and pure joy. For her, art is "like
eating breakfast." It is part of her day and comes naturally. It is also part of her family life when Kandy and her oldest
daughter get together to create. She advises others who may want to try painting to find people who love art and paint with
them. She says, "If I can do it, you can too."
Kandy's inspiration comes from her daily life. She paints on a whim and chooses a variety of subjects from Nisses to portraits,
pets, still lifes, everyday objects like spools of thread, landscapes, flowers and whatever else captures her imagination.
It is clear from seeing Kandy's work that she paints with feeling. Her portraits are warm and lively and her colors are brilliant.
During the Christmas season Kandy's magical "Runzel Volks" dolls and "Nisses" paintings peer out at
visitors to the Wildwood Clubhouse.
