About the Artist
Before retiring, Joe Stein was a PE instructor and consultant in the California school system. He became interested in art
while living in Los Gatos and developing an exercise program for the handicapped at a facility that also offered art classes.
Joe says that he is mainly a self-taught artist who paints from his own photos in a realistic style using fine brushes
to achieve detail. Joe paints with acrylics because it is so easy to redo areas that may not be what he is looking for in
the finished piece. He usually begins painting the background first, moving down the canvas as he works.
Joe is a California native who expresses his love for this state in his traditional landscapes of well loved places like
Yosemite and Monterey. His landscapes often convey serenity through the use of muted hues. Joe has taken art classes offered
at the Wildwood Community Center and found them very helpful.
