Artist Profile

dennis_dobbs_mug.jpg

Dennis Dobbs' works have been inspired by three contemporary artists. Cynthia Schuman of San Francisco taught him creative techniques for using resins on canvas. He has apprenticed for two years with Cynthia at her studio in Hillsborough. Dennis has also been influenced by the dynamic movement and color seen in the works of Maui artist, Elan Vital. More recently, he has applied the medium of resins to mixed media seascapes influenced by bay area artist, Francine Markoe.

Dennis likes to paraphrase Jefferson in saying, "I'm getting up there in years, but I am young as an artist." He enjoys experimenting with "what if I do this" techniques using resins. He owes more to discovery learning than any formal art training. He values the experience of creative exploration whether his works meet with commercial success or not. He has exhibited at the Center for the Arts in Grass Valley and in a private exhibition in Hillsborough.

While in Lake Wildwood, Dennis usually paints outside with resins, but when he and his wife Betty travel, the luggage always includes acrylic paints to spend treasured moments capturing the local landscapes and seascapes. Acrylics are far more transportable than the materials for work with resins. Dennis has a passion for the "doing" of art and being in the moment of nature's beauty. He encourages anyone to jump in and discover the unique hidden talents we all possess.
